What do you do when a customer says they’re keen on motorsport??? Take them racing of course!

Anthony Painter MX5Anthony owns a lightly modified Renault Sport Clio which we’ve tuned for track and road applications. The track setup has helped him to sample Queensland Raceway during Time Attack events and Wakefield Park at the recent Oz Renault Sport Nationals Meet with great success. This weekend we asked Anthony to join our team for the Valvoline Winton 300.

The event is a gruelling 100 lap race around one of Australia’s most challenging circuits – Winton Motor Raceway. Normally the winning combination is a two driver team however we were keen to help Anthony adjust to the challenge of racing in a 52 car field.

So we invited Anthony to join the very experienced open-wheeler and sports car racer Nick Leontsinis and Chris Romano in a late model Mazda MX5. Targa Racing supplied and supported the effort whilst Romano WORKX prepared the iconic two-seater sports car for the epic event.

Friday proved to be a real “eye-opener” as Anthony rolled onto a track brimming with a variety of talent and machinery. To the teams delight, he proved to be consistently fast and very aware of the chaotic conditions. Romano and Leontsinis then conducted a number of practice runs to determine setup and fuel burn.

Thirtieth position was the reward in a 52 car grid. An amazing performance by Leontsinis in the naturally aspirated MX5 and a great start despite the handicap of running 3 drivers.

Storm clouds peppered the horizon early Sunday morning as we awaited the 2pm start. Romano would pilot the first stint with Anthony managing the next before Leontsinis brought it home. Whilst the threat of rain was ever present the rolling start took place on a dry track as 49 starters thundered into turn 1.

Romano traded places in the opening laps with a gaggle of BMW’s, GTR’s, Falcon’s, Commodore’s and MX5’s before a safety car was called on lap 12.

A quick stop and Anthony was strapped-in for his first-ever race!!!

Joining the back of the pace-car lead train Anthony quickly settled into the rhythm of the race before the lights on the safety car disappeared and racing resumed.

An eventful stint saw Anthony in close combat with the class leaders whilst allowing the outright cars to pass AND navigating the slower cars from the lower classes.

Targa Racing MX5The team had then hoped to pit under another another safety car period in order to negate the disadvantage of the additional pit-stop. After 33 laps the fuel burn became critical and Anthony was directed to pit. The CPS (compulsory pit stop) for fuel is a timed 5 minute event and so the Romano WORKX team regrettably lost a lap to the class leaders. Anthony emerged from the drivers seat surprisingly “sprite”. An amazing effort for a debutant backed-up by consistent lap-times during an incredibly chaotic stint.

Terry Nightingale Nick Leontsinis in MX5Leontsinis drove a compelling stint managing to set one of the fastest times in class and almost un-lapping the #115 MX5. Lap 84 and a safety car period ended any chance of regaining the lap. Racing resumed on the 90th lap and the race was flagged on the 95th netting the Romano WORKX team 17th outright and 5th in class.

An outstanding result for the team and Anthony whom we’d like to sincerely thank for choosing our team to make his motorsport debut.

Renault Clio At Time ATtackThe 2013 Queensland Time Attack Series has been run ‘n won. Bob Romano Auto Care & Performance has been a proud supporter of the Time Attack Series. Our crew attended the 2013 events and been astounded by the level of professionalism as well as the effort that many of the competitors go to in search of the perfect lap!

The series attracts an amazing array of hardware including R32 GTR’s, Porsche Cup Cars, M series BMW’s, AMG’s, Renault Sport Megane’s & Clio’s, EVO’s, Cobra’s, Radicals and a gaggle of Japans’ finest cult cars including Toyota 86’s, MX5’s and 180SX’s

VZ Crewman

A tradies dream – this VZ Crewman is absolutely immaculate. The owner has lovingly and painstakingly maintained this car and it’s great to see it booked in every so often for some ‘fun bits’. The “bits” include a Harrop brake kit upgrade, a VCM air box & full custom VCM ecu reflash tune.

We dyno’d the car before and after the air box fitment and reflash to end up with almost 330HP at the wheels! Check out the gallery as well as some video of the last dyno run.

BMW X3 Reflash Tune

BMW X3This is one of our latest projects. A BMW X3 3.0 TDI X Drive 4×4. Our customer was hoping for an increase in both power and torque but also drivability. Naturally, as this model is a 4WD we used our Four Wheel Drive dyno in order to properly assess the power and torque improvements.

Dyno ChartThe X3 is mechanically standard apart form the custom reflash tune and in its standard ECU format (before reflash) we measured the power as 165hp at the wheels.

Once the ECU was reflashed and we jumped-on the 4WD dyno we successfully achieved 229hp at the wheels. This represents an almost 40% increase in power with great throttle response and sharper shifting from the transmission. Another bonus is the overall improvement to the drive.

It’s Time To Go….RS250 Megane

Megan RS250Our road registered Renault Megane RS250 is for sale to make way for our new project car – the new Renault Sport Clio (details to come). Our Megane is the fastest RS250\RS265 in Australia having set the fastest times at the 2012 & 2013 Oz Renault Sports Nationals at Winton & Wakefield Park respectively. Chris Romano & his Romano WORKX team have devoted hundreds of ours to the development of this limited edition gem.

Harness BarWe developed our RS250 for both road & track with an emphasis on drivability and a bias towards every-day-driving as Chris drives the car to work every other day. The race harness bar is a bolt-in modification that allows the back seat to be utilised and the custom tune is suited to “pump” fuel. Oz Renault Sport Nationals

Megane On TrailerFour days of country drives, great meals, fantastic people and even a little bit of track work – this years Oz Renault Sport Nationals have been one of the best subscribed and enjoyable yet. Our Romano WorkX team joined the fleet as they descended upon Yass for a spirited drive through the Brindebella National Forrest. The drive took-in some of country NSW’s best views and roads and a brief stop gave us an opportunity to catch-up with the rest of the members. The level of participation has been fantastic as witnessed by the breadth of models that attended the event. Every Clio and Megane from the 172 to the RS265 were proudly represented in their varied colours and specification.

The drive back to Yass was equally vigorous and the flotilla convened in the Yass Soldiers Club for a fantastic dinner and slide-show. The images of the previous years’ Oz Renault Sports Nationals were a nostalgic boon for previous participants and a visual feast for the newer members.

Yellow MeganeThe event had originally started in Albury on the previous day and included members from as far as South Australia (who where suitable rewarded for the efforts on the last night of the event). The majority of members hailed from Victoria, NSW and the ACT. Our Romano WorkX crew were the only representatives from Queensland however I suspect that next years ‘Nationals’ will attract more members.

The Saturday schedule included a track day at Wakefield Park hosted by Circuit Club. A large portion of our members signed up for a full day of tyre destroying action which started with a track familiarisation session. The weather was perfect as the first un-timed sessions kicked-off the day. This allowed for passengers to climb aboard including driver-trainers and other forum members.

The level of driving standards were perfect as our cars shared the track with supercharged Honda S2000’s, AMG Mercedes and turbo charged GTR’s. Our very own Megane RS250 finished 5th outright with a 1:08.433 and fastest Renault. The fastest non-professional Renault was also a Megane RS250 ably piloted by Adrian Weir and an amazing time of 1:10.006.

RenaultsMark Eddy, Francois Jouy, Adam Spence & Russell Boyd arrived at the circuit with their respective purpose built track weapons. Eddy & Jouy have prepared the latest entrant for the Shannons Australian Manufacturers Championship series – a Megane RS265 replete with a remarkable matt finish similar to the Angels & Demon Clio series.

Spence fielded his Targa class winning Megane – one of two that recently contested Targa Adelaide. The level of detail and finish was matched only by the sophistication of the equipment and gadgetry.

Boyd’s go-kart like Clio turned heads even as it sat on it’s custom trailer at Yass the previous afternoon. Once on-track the spectators rushed to the fence to get a glimpse of the pocket rocket. Adam Spence managed to wrestle the keys (nee start button) from Boyd for a quick spin just before lunch…lucky bugger!

The evening festivities then moved to the ‘local’ in Gunning where the pub food was equally matched by the long-tales of track infamy…

Big BallsAnthony Musson and Dishan Marikar presided over the event which included awards for a number of feats during the 2013 event. A truly remarkable effort by both Anthony and Dishan that will be hard to beat in years to come. Romano WorkX would like to thank all the participants, volunteers and especially Anthony Musson and Dishan Marikar for a truly enjoyable ‘Nationals’. Roll On 2014!!!

Festival of Italian Motorsport

One of the Romano WORKX fold will be attending the Festival of Italian Motorsport at Lakeside this weekend in their Alfa Romeo Giulietta. We’ll have more pics and news from the event over the course of the weekend.

Up to 100 of Australia’s finest Italian automobiles will descend upon Lakeside Park on Sunday, September 8 when the legendary southeast Queensland circuit hosts the sixth annual Festival of Italian Motorsport.

With a record number of Italian cars taking part in last year’s Festival of Italian Motorsport at Queensland Raceway, the Italian car clubs of Queensland are confident that the return to the iconic Lakeside Park will take this year’s event to even greater heights. The Italian auto spectacular’s successful theme remains unchanged with a celebration of the racing heritage of legendary marques such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati and Lamborghini.

As with the past three years, the 2013 Festival of Italian Motorsport will be held over one action-packed day as part of Queensland Raceways’ Top Gear Racing Series. The Italian cars will participate in race and regularity categories as well as a show & shine display.

The day will be a hive of activity from 9am through to 4pm, with the race category hitting the track for qualifying, followed by three eight lap races. The regularity category will have four eight lap regularity heats, in which each driver must attempt to lap as consistently as possible – some drivers claim the best strategy is just to go flat out!

The show and shine will take place from 10am on the grassed area in front of the Lakeside Function Centre (the big yellow building). This spot is the perfect location to grab a coffee from the Lakeside cafe and peruse the fine machinery in between bouts of on-track action.

While some of these fine Italian racers are worth upwards of $300,000, don’t expect this to be a leisurely Sunday drive. The competition between marques is fierce. Watch out for the turbo-charged battle between Bruce Horey in the former World Touring Car Championship Maserati and Richard Shinkfield in the Lancia-powered Fiat X-19. Or cast your eyes over the sleek lines of Charlie Clements’ Ferrari 308 GTB as it rockets down the straight, with his good buddy Trevor Bassett in hot pursuit in his Ferrari 365 GTC/4. The machinery may be fancy but the racing is fierce, so buckle up for a day of spectacular action.

Other categories competing as part of the Top Gear Racing series on the day include two groups of Super Karts and the mighty Hyundai Excels. With only $10 entry on the gate and at least five categories of action, this is one Sunday of motorsport not to be missed.
